Plant Feeding

As every gardener knows, plants need nourishment to grow. In nature, as leaves fall and plants die they gradually decompose and return the nutrients needed by plants to the soil, thus maintaining the natural balance.

However, modern garden practices – mowing, weeding, tidying – remove the waste that would have rotted down naturally. By creating our ideal gardens we are depleting the soil of nutrient reserves and to maintain and grow our garden plants, we need to ensure that they are not undernourished and have access to the nutrients they need. This is where fertilisers come in – they replenish the soil with the nutrients needed by the plants.

In total, plants can absorb up to about 30 different nutrients and minerals and, depending on the type of plant, the state of the soil, and the local climate, each plant’s nutritional requirements may be different.

Most general fertilisers will contain the three major nutrients – Nitrogen (N), Phosphate (P) and Potassium (K). The higher the nitrogen level, compared to the others, the more the fertiliser will encourage vigorous growth and foliage development and where Potassium levels are higher, the fertiliser will encourage flowering and fruiting. Many fertilisers also contain micronutrients and trace elements to meet specific conditions and plant requirements.
